1 bottle of acrylic paint (I purchase my paints from Hobby Lobby)
paint brush (3)
1 sheet of card stock (I purchased my card stock from Hobby Lobby)
wood round (or any shape you prefer)
easy access to water
1. PAINT YOUR WOOD ROUND BASE & WOOD FEET
Using your acrylic paint color and paint brush, coat your wood round on the bottom and sides ONLY! (No need to paint the top since you'll glue the cardstock to it later.)
Paint the wood feet on the sides and bottom. Allow to dry completely (roughly 45 minutes) before moving on to the next step.
2. GLUE THE WOOD FEET TO THE BOTTOM OF THE WOOD ROUND BASE
Using a paint brush, apply wood glue to the open end of the feet. Place your feet on the bottom of the wood round on a square pattern, making sure it's uniform in design to stabilize the riser when placed upright. I found it's best to use 4 feet for this wood round because using only 3 might make the riser topple to one side or the other if not placed appropriately.
3. GLUE THE CARDSTOCK TO THE TOP OF THE WOOD ROUND BASE
Turn your cardstock design-side-down on a flat surface.
Apply Mod Podge or any paper craft glue to the entire top unpainted surface of the wood round. Quickly flip your riser face down on the back side of the cardstock. Lay something heavy on top of the feet to weigh it down while you wait for the project to dry completely.
4. CUT & SAND OFF THE EXCESS CARDSTOCK REMAINS
Now that your cardstock is securely adhered to the top of your wood round, use scissors to cut as close to the edge as you can. THEN, use sandpaper to sand along the edges to define the circle. This will help you in the next step.
BE CAREFUL to leave some excess paper so as not to cut too close and ruin the circle.
5. REMOVE THE LEFTOVER PAPER USING WATER
Using your water source (via sink or bowl of water) and a paint brush, apply water to the left over edges of the paper. This step will weaken the strength of the paper just along that edge and allow ease of removal by hand. It's a tedious task, but it really works great!
(I know, I really should have turned off the water! What a waste! shame shame)
6. SAND THE WOOD FOR AN ANTIQUED LOOK! THEN, APPLY A COAT OF MODPODGE (or 2) TO THE ENTIRE PROJECT
Clean the edges of your glued cardstock with sandpaper.
If you like the "antiqued" look where it appears the wood has aged, then use your sandpaper again to rough up your wood base and wood legs. Be careful not to remove all your paint, just some of it!
Using a paintbrush again (for this step I used a larger brush to apply quicker) apply Mod Podge to the entire riser. Cover the wood and paper, being careful not to glob it on. Make your first coat thin, allow to dry completely, then add one more thin layer. Allow to dry completely before staging your unique decorative riser in your space!
