CLEAN & DECLUTTER~
Nothing makes me want to turn and run away faster than dust bunnies and piles of stuff accumulated! I'll be the first to admit that I wish there were a way around this first tip, but keeping your bedroom clean of dust and clutter promotes relaxation and serenity.
CLEAN = LESS ANXIETY!!

Start with your clutter. Fold clothing away, minimize your nick-knacks, and clear your walking paths. Especially in a smaller bedroom like ours (12' x 14'), it is important to have as much uncluttered floor space as possible not only for safety, but also to give the illusion that the room is bigger than it's actual size.
Next, break out your cleaning supplies and wear the gloves! Be conscientious about using cleaning products that are natural and scent-free in case of allergens.
For example, I prefer a diluted mix of bleach and water at a 1:10 ration to wipe down walls and floors. I also use a bottle of water and baking soda to spray my curtains and rug to neutralize any odors.
For the initial cleaning process and then again every spring and fall (at least) you'll want to deep clean your bedroom. Clean your walls, floors (don't forget your closet floors and under the bed, too!), doorways, windows (inside and out), headboard and side tables. Wipe off those table lamps and ceiling fans as well as the television. Be sure to swipe away those cobwebs at your ceilings as well!
SET THE TONE WITH ART & DECOR~
Center an art piece as a focal point in the room.
Choosing art is a very personal endeavor. You might like animal prints, retro style prints, or landscapes. Perhaps you prefer floral arrangements, or vintage chic originals.... Whatever piece of art you choose, try to focus the rest of the room décor on this style.
~Since we have a sort of boho-lodge vibe throughout our home, we chose a metal sculpture of a forest at sunset that we fell in love with at a local art venue in downtown Indianapolis. Based on this sculpture, we added a Robert Frost forest print on the adjacent wall (purchased on Etsy) and hung riding hats on the other side of the room; all items in hues of brown, gold, or grey.
ADD A RUG or TWO~
Though your hardwood or vinyl planks are GORGEOUS, don't forget that they're also cold and hard. I love getting up in the morning barefoot when there's a rug to land on! Soft, plush rugs can make your room feel luxurious and warm, and they're a great way to break up the room for added beauty! We found this incredibly luxurious 7' x 9' rug at Wal-Mart for under $100... a great price makes me love it even more!

MIX UP THE PALLETTE WITH WARM CALMING COLORS~
When I first moved into our home, the walls were all a pale beige color....pretty in they're own right, but they just didn't give me any warm cozy vibes. In the master bedroom especially, I find it very important to focus on wall color and what appeals to your senses. Since I wanted the room to remain somewhat dark and moody in the daytime, we chose a deep shade for our bedroom that gave height to the room and defined its shape when paired with the white ceiling.
~Our main chosen wall shade is Mountain Pine PPU12-19 by Behr; all our trim and doors are painted bright white as a stark contrast, defining crisp lines around the room.
The newest trend is to paint your trim and ceilings the same shade as your walls~ I bite my nails with this idea in this room since we may be selling, but I'm definitely following this trend in our upcoming forever home.
~To compliment the mountain pine shade, we added elements in the room in hues of beige, orangey-brown, black, dark wood stains, and grey.
FLUFF IT UP!
Treat your bed like an oasis by adding lots of comfort. Include a pillow-top comforter to make your mattress feel plush. Layer pillows in different materials such as faux fur, velvet, and 100% cotton. Throw blankets like the ones seen here are a great way to add texture to the bed and make you want to dive right in!
6. ADD TOUCHES OF WOOD
Light pine, dark cedar, or white blonde oak...it doesn't matter! Mix it up if you like or stick to one shade. The choice is always yours, but say YES to wood! This natural element brings the outdoors in and adds a surprising warmth when paired against painted finishes.
I chose a subtle approach by incorporating a dark walnut bed and side tables, but you might take it as far as to include wood on an accent wall, ceiling, or simple panels. You cannot go wrong by adding natural elements into your space!

7. ADD TEXTURE~
This step is super easy and can be accomplished in many ways! Textured materials add appeal; making you want to touch them and snuggle up with them. Though you may not want to go to bed hugging your linen lamp shade, it sure looks amazing next to a wood grained bed and fluffy down-stuffed fur pillows! Add to that some waffle patterned curtains and chenille throw blankets and you'll be snoozing in no time!

8. CREATE AN AMBIANCE WITH SOFT LIGHTING
Not only do you need adequate lighting for functionality, but you need AMBIANCE!
Different lights create different feels....for example: an underside table light allows you to see where your feet are scuffling, while the battery powered candle sconces create a sultry relaxing mood. We need lights for reading, lights for dressing, and lights for atmosphere changes. You can never have too many lights or switches!!
9. CHOOSE A DRAMATIC BED
Finding the perfect bed can be a challenge if your space is limited. I find that beds with tall headboards and exposed footboards add character, texture, and huge functionality! But if your space is too tight, find a bed without the footboard and minimize the depth of the headboard; this allows more wiggle room and you won't have to tuck in your comforter. WINNING!
10. HANG YOUR CURTAINS HIGH
My rule of thumb is this: make your room feel as tall as it possibly can! If your ceilings are under 8 feet, hang your curtains as high as you can get them without touching the ceiling. If your ceilings are 8 feet or higher, hang your curtains no less than 1 foot from the ceiling. Go higher if you can!
~Another suggestion is to order your curtains to size so they don't drag on the floor. This really makes for easy floor cleaning and less rumpled curtains. You may get into some custom sizing, but Amazon has you covered for all your curtain needs!
NOTE: I'll be ordering longer curtains for this room soon because they're not as close to the floor as I'd like . We'll post updated pictures in a new blog shortly!
11. DON'T FORGET TO CHANGE THOSE SWITCH PLATE COVERS!!!
When our house was built about 9 years ago, the contractor chose to install general plastic bright white switch and outlet covers. During those 9 years the covers have dulled, cracked, and scratched. This happens often with the plastic covers. Typically no bid deal, but in our case it was ONE MORE THING to update for a classy feel!
We splurged for stainless steel covers because they reflect light, clean well, and don't scratch (for the most part!). We found these covers on Amazon after unsuccessfully searching for matching sets in the local hardware store.
I am a stickler for detail, so I made sure the screw heads were all vertical facing when I changed all our covers. You don't have to do this, but my OCD says I must!

12. KEEP READING BOOKS NEAR YOUR BED~
This step serves several purposes:
~If you have a book near your lounging space, you're likely to pick it up and read when you're finally done with your chores instead of reaching for your phone. Believe me, this is a WIN!
~Reading books can calm anxiety, reset your brain when it's on overload, and lead you into slumber if you allow.
~While it's not easy to remove technology from the bedroom, it's good to at least store it away. Get back to the basics and reset your mind and body for the next big thing!
13. TOSS IN SOME GREENERY
You may have a green thumb, but I do not!
So, I resort mostly to faux ferns for my "greenery".
Having a plant or two in your cozy space promotes relaxation and meditation.
You can display them in pots, hang them from the ceiling, or even go so far as to create a living wall.
Displaying your plants at different heights will draw your eyes up and around the room for added interest and allure.
You can situate them on shelves close to the ceiling, in front of your windows, or just opt to have them on your side table.
Whatever you choose will be right for YOU!
